LTE to be tested in oil and gas industry

There is no doubt that LTE or Long Term Evolution will provide many benefits to many different areas, and this 4th Generation technology is soon to be tested in the old and gas industry.

In countries all around the world many are eagerly awaiting the widespread rollout of the 4th Generation technology known as LTE or Long Term Evolution. Many are already aware that this technology will bring a variety of benefits to various groups, industries, and consumers.

According to one recent report technology such as LTE could really benefit certain industries that have a need to such technology but currently lack a viable means of connectivity. In fact, it has been revealed that a start up company in Houston, Texas, the Texas Energy Network, will be testing LTE technology in an oil and gas environment.

The company will be using equipment from Alcatel-Lucent to carry out the test. The energy company is hoping to show that LTE technology could provide more economical internet access when it comes to the drilling and exploration of oil sites. Current problems with connectivity and resources makes it difficult for companies to report back and send critical real time information based on their findings, and this is where LTE could help.

Stan Hughey, Chief Technology Officer at TENS, said that at present most oil and gas companies were using wireless links that were similar to dial up, or for exploration used satellite VSATs (very small aperture terminals). He said that whilst these offered speeds of over 1Mbps using LTE would work out cheaper.
